Air quality monitoring

Air quality monitoring is carried out at designated locations around FGM to assess potential impacts on air quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.

FGMs extensive air quality monitoring program consists of:

  • 14 x depositional dust gauges,
  • 3 x high volume air samplers (PM10 and PM2.5),
  • 2 x continuous beta attenuation monitors, and
  • 5 x continuous ambient air quality monitors

Gaseous emissions and odour are also measured from underground ventilation shafts/outlets.

Monitoring results are reviewed to assess local/regional air quality conditions, identify potential mine-related sources of dust, and inform additional air quality management measures, if required.

Fosterville Gold Mine’s air quality limits are set in accordance with ERS (EPA, 2021) and Publication 1961 (EPA, 2022).

Air quality exceedances are investigated and reported to the regulators (Earth Resources Regulation and Environment Protection Authority Victoria).

FGM’s air quality monitoring results are reported at quarterly Environment Review Committee meetings.

The ambition of Fosterville Gold Mine is to ensure every interaction with communities and with stakeholders is positive and aligned with the organisation’s values.

Managing dust

FGM employs a variety of dust control measures to manage dust from its operational activities. These controls include, but are not limited to:

  • Application of water and chemical dust suppressants on tailings heaps, stockpiles and unsealed roads.
  • Hydroseeding/hydro-mulching of topsoil stockpiles and earthen walls.
  • Limiting vehicle speeds on unsealed surfaces.
  • Restricting works during unfavourable weather conditions.
