The Friends of the Bendigo Kilmore Rail Trail (FBKRT) have launched a new initiative to enrich the O’Keefe Rail Trail with the installation of interpretive signs at key historical sites. This project, supported by a Fosterville Gold Mine Community Grant, aims to tell the story of the area’s rich history for those who use the trail.
“The completion of the interpretive signs along the O’Keefe Rail Trail marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enhance this historic route,” said Malcolm Ward, Grants Coordinator for FBKRT. “These signs not only celebrate the trail’s heritage, but also serve as a portal for users to delve deeper into the past through QR codes offering more detailed information.”
The O’Keefe Rail Trail, which spans approximately 50 kilometres from Bendigo to Heathcote, is part of a larger vision to complete the trail between Bendigo and Kilmore. Named after Andrew O’Keefe, the trail’s builder, this safe off-road path is accessible to walkers and cyclists of all ages and abilities.
“The support from Fosterville Gold Mine has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition,” added Malcolm.
Trudi Jackson, Senior Community Advisor at FGM, said: “We are delighted to contribute to a project that not only enriches the trail’s charm but also enhances its potential as a premier rail trail and tourist attraction.”
