MARCH 2024

Sharkey's Pit backfill and Campaspe Road closure

In accordance with Fosterville Gold Mine’s commitment to keeping the community informed, please see below information outlining upcoming works to backfill and rehabilitate Sharkey’s Pit.

Sharkey’s Pit is an oxide open cut pit that was mined during the early 1990s, prior to the commencement of the modern sulphide operations at Fosterville Gold Mine. The pit is located on private property directly north of Campaspe Road within mining licence MIN5404. The southern portion of the pit was partially backfilled at the cessation of open cut mining, along with the reinstatement of Campaspe Road.

The works associated with Sharkey’s Pit backfilling and rehabilitation project were assessed as part of the Administrative Change to FGM’s work plan and were subsequently approved by Earth Resources Regulator on 8 February 2024.

Prior to backfilling commencing, vegetation clearance will occur on the oxide overburden stockpile (source material for pit backfilling) and along a portion of Campaspe Road to establish the haul road and tip-head. Backfilling of Sharkey’s Pit is expected to commence in late March 2024 and continue for a period of approximately 8 months. Earthmoving activities will occur during dayshift hours only with up to four surface haulage trucks operating at a time.

From 15 March, a section of Campaspe Road will be closed for the Sharkey’s Pit backfilling and rehabilitation project. The section of Campaspe Road will be closed for the duration of the project to enable loaded haul trucks to travel safely across the road. Please refer to the attached map which outlines the Campaspe Road closure.

Fosterville Gold Mine will complete routine and targeted noise monitoring to assess and manage potential noise impacts to community throughout the duration of the earthmoving activities. As works progress, we will continue to keep you updated regarding expected completion dates and any changes to road closure conditions.

Additional information regarding the Sharkey’s Pit Backfilling project can be found in the Summer edition of the FGM Community Newsletter.
