Celebrating a bridge that’s survived the test of time

Hidden away in the heart of the countryside, the charming wooden Sugarloaf Road Bridge which traverses Axe Creek, marked a remarkable milestone yesterday – the big 1-5-0! Far from the major highways, this bridge is a symbol of survival against the odds, cherished by the local community.

The bridge’s story began in 1862, when local residents embarked on a relentless 12-year campaign for its construction. The bridge finally opened in 1874. Fast forward to 1993, the bridge nearly faced an untimely end, with a proposal to replace it with a floodway. But, like all great comeback stories, the local community rallied together and, thanks to their efforts, the bridge was restored instead, securing its place in local history.

Today, the Sugarloaf Road Bridge is more than just a historic structure; it is a vital link in Axedale's transport network, accommodating the area’s increasing population.

We were thrilled to be invited to attend this milestone celebration by Strathfieldsaye & District Community Enterprise and provided a commemorative cake to help mark the celebration. Thanks to Jade from Dote Cakes and Catering who more than did the bridge’s grand milestone justice, with their creativity.

As part of the day, the attendees all stood on the bridge for a photo to reenact a photo that was taken back in 1874, when the bridge first opened.
