Metallurgical Technician
Metallurgical Technicians develop test programs and test a wide variety of ore samples for mineral processing, metal refining, or research purposes. They provide technical support to metallurgical engineers.
Overview
Metallurgical Technicians work in laboratories, factories or on mine sites. In a full-time role you could expect to work on a shift basis. Some Technicians work in rural or remote areas on a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) basis.
The job role suits someone who enjoys technical and engineering activities, has good analytical skills and an aptitude for working with computers. The tasks performed can be routine and good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail is an asset.
Day-to-day
- Obtain, measure, and prepare samples for mineralogical testing
- Put materials through set test procedures, often using complex equipment, under the direction of metallurgists and other professionals
- Analyse, record and report results
- Put together charts, graphs, and other data for reports
- Set up, operate, and clean laboratories and scientific equipment
To become a Metallurgical Technician
You can work as Metallurgical Technician following completion of a VET qualification in Manufacturing Technology, Laboratory Skills, or similar certification. Alternatively you can complete a Bachelor degree in Extractive Metallurgy or Mineral Processing. Graduate Metallurgists often start their careers as Metallurgical Technicians before moving into roles as Metallurgists.
