Electricians install and maintain electrical power, communications, lighting, and control systems in homes, businesses, and factories.
Overview
Electricians work in a very wide range areas, from installing power in homes and offices, to major engineering projects.
As an electrician, you would install, inspect, and test equipment, making sure that systems work, and find and fix faults. Work is a combination of indoor and outdoor work. You might have to work in cramped spaces to reach electrical cabling and equipment, and you might sometimes work at heights on scaffolding.
This job is suitable for people with good practical skills and an ability to follow technical drawings, building plans and wiring diagrams. An ability to work carefully, methodically, and safely is essential.
Day-to-day
- Install electrical systems, lighting, fire protection, security, and data network systems in all types of buildings
- Maintain systems to make sure that they are working efficiently and safely
- Build and install control panels that operate the electrical systems inside buildings
- Repair and maintain electrical motors and other machinery like transformers
To become an Electrician
To become an electrician, you would need to complete an apprenticeship in Electrotechnology Electrician or Electrical Fitting.
Entry requirements may vary but will require junior secondary school certificate or equivalent. After completing your apprenticeship, you can apply for an electrical licence to carry out unsupervised work.
