Epsom Primary School hatches something special

Epsom Primary School has brought learning to life with their ‘Ellesmere, Epsom Eggs’ project, made possible by a Fosterville Gold Mine Community Grant. This fantastic project has transformed a blank patch of land into a vibrant hub for learning and connection. At the heart of it all is a charming barn-style chook house, fondly named ‘Ellesmere,’ a nod to the original locality of Fosterville Gold Mine.

‘Ellesmere’ is more than just a chook house—it’s part of a bigger plan to create The Green Nest, an outdoor learning space that’s all about exploration and hands-on experiences. This space includes veggie pods, a greenhouse, natural chill-out areas, an outdoor kitchen, and now, with FGM’s support, a home for some feathered friends. The aim? To help students ease back into school life post-COVID while fostering a love for learning and nature.

And the fun didn’t stop there. A school-wide chook-naming competition sparked plenty of laughs, with names like Nugget, KFC, and Tender among the creative suggestions. The winners? Nugget, Effie, and Edna. On a good day, they’re collecting up to five eggs—which have even made their way into recipes at the canteen and the school's Energy Break Through teams in Maryborough recently.

The real impact of the Ellesmere project goes far beyond cute chickens and fresh eggs. It has brought a new sense of joy and well-being to the school. With over 50 kids regularly lining up to visit the chooks during recess, it’s clear how much this space means to them. The hands-on activities promote teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility, while the outdoor setting nurtures their mental health and connection to nature.

Trudi Jackson, FGM’s Senior Community Advisor, said: “It’s amazing to see how projects like these not only enhance learning but also bring so much happiness to the school community.”

From collecting eggs to naming competitions, the ‘Ellesmere, Epsom Eggs’ project is teaching life skills while filling the school with laughter and excitement. It’s proof that sometimes, the best lessons come from getting your hands dirty—and maybe cuddling a chicken or two!
