OCTOBER 2025

Not just another school week

Fosterville Gold Mine recently welcomed Year 10 student Lily from Crusoe College for a week of work experience with our Community and Environment team. The placement provided Lily with the opportunity to see first-hand the diverse range of monitoring and environmental activities carried out on site.

As well as assisting with high-volume dust monitoring, which involved carefully handling filters and reprogramming the equipment used to measure air quality, Lily helped with water sampling, collecting and testing samples from tanks, dams and groundwater bores, before helping prepare them for laboratory analysis in Melbourne.

Another highlight was learning all about ground vibration monitoring. This involved helping to calibrate the specialised equipment that tracks mine induced seismic activity.

Exploring the world under her feet

Of course, Lily’s week would not have been complete without experiencing life underground. Her trip – with fellow work experience student, Chilli – took her to the lowest levels over a kilometre below the surface, to gain a fuller understanding of why monitoring and safety procedures are so important.

Lily admitted that the underground experience was one to remember – not only because of the water and heat, but also because of the unique smell of being underground.

Senior Environment and Community Advisor Oliver Hickson said the team enjoyed having Lily on site for the week: “Lily showed great enthusiasm and interest in the monitoring activities, and we hope the experience gave her a valuable understanding of the important work our Community and Environment team does every day.”

Following her placement, Lily was interviewed by fellow work experience student, Laura, who was completing her own placement with Tough Cookie Marketing at the time. It was a perfect chance for them to connect and share their positive work experience stories.
