Emergency teams put their skills to the test
Fosterville Gold Mine was a hive of activity over the weekend, hosting the 29th annual Victoria Mine Rescue Competition (VMRC) from 11-13 November, 2022.
The competition saw nine mine rescue teams from Victoria and New South Wales compete against one another in a range of safety training events.
Their skills were put to the test with a variety of simulated emergencies, providing life-like opportunities to practice the specialised skills they have with each other.
The teams participated in a range of exercises including firefighting, first aid, team skills, rope rescue and search and rescue. These events prepare, train and test the teams for the rare occasion a real-life incident may occur.
“The competition is an important part of the mining industry and its commitment to zero harm, supporting highly trained personnel across Australia to gain the skills and experience needed to deal with any emergency, keeping our mines and community safe,” said Andrew Mattiske, Health, Safety and Security Manager at Fosterville Gold Mine.
Mandalay Costerfield won best overall at the event, followed by CFA Oscar 1 Technical Rescue in second place and CMOC Northparkes in third place.
Well done to all the teams who competed and congratulations to all of the winners, volunteers, event officials, and sponsors who made the event possible.
