Why is our connection with gold so strong?

The World Gold Council set out to answer this question with their new documentary GOLD: A Journey with Idris Elba, which explores gold’s meaning and contribution to societies all over the world.

As he uncovers the human stories that show its enduring influence and impact, host Idris Elba takes viewers on a journey through the story of gold, from its position as a revered marker of culture and status, to its criticality to the global banking ecosystem.

Agnico Eagle was proud to collaborate on this special project by welcoming Mr. Elba and the film crew for a tour of our LaRonde Complex, where they witnessed how gold is mined and produced.

LaRonde is located in the Abitibi region of northwestern Quebec and is Agnico Eagle’s oldest operating mine, having achieved commercial production in 1988. The LaRonde mine is also renowned for its 2.2-km deep Penna Shaft, the deepest single-lift shaft in the Western Hemisphere.
